Celebrity Theme Party with Matthew Mitcham - 30 December

We're very excited for tonight's show, which features Olympic-gold-medal-winning Australian diver Matthew Mitcham. We sat down for a chat with Matthew a couple of weeks ago, and he was eloquent on the topics of his sport, coming out, social media, his university studies, and much more. He also went off on some hilarious tangents! Tune in at 9pm for a full hour of Matthew, including some of his favourite party tracks.

November song lists

Here are the songs we played in our first three November shows. Comments are open - don't be shy!

HORSES songs - 4 November
Guns and Horses - Ellie Goulding
Ride a White Horse - Goldfrapp

From Daniel's blog: “On the cocktail menu, we had four cocktails: the Four Horsemen (equal parts gold tequila, Jägermeister, Rumple Minze and Bacardi 151), the Headless Horseman (vodka and ginger ale with bitters and a slice of orange), the Trojan Horse (a pint glass with equal parts Coke and Guinness), and, just to completely break everyone, the Horse Jizz (equal parts beer and milk). As one of our Twitter followers, SammiLou, commented DON’T EVER GOOGLE IT WITH SAFE SEARCH OFF. Words to live by, I think. Incidentally, that last link is to SammiLou’s tweet, not to a Google search on Horse Jizz. It’s totally safe.”

Cocktails: “... the kinda disgusting Celtic War Party, the kinda lethal Suburban War Hammer, and the kinda awesome Unknown Warrior.”

LOVERS songs - 18 November
All the Lovers - Kylie Minogue
Lovers in the Backseat - Scissor Sisters
The Book Lovers - Broadcast
Calling All Lovers - Rogue Traders
Such Unlikely Lovers - Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach
True Lovers - Dannii Minogue
Young Lovers - Paul Kelly
Lovers (Live a Little Longer) - ABBA
Hello Young Lovers - Julie Andrews

Costumes: Daniel came as one of the extras in Kylie's “All the Lovers” video (i.e. in a pair of white undies), Katie carried many books and was a Book Lover, and Nat wore a toga-type-situation-experience - she was the Greek god of love, Eros.
Conversation Pit: The topic was, “What makes a good lover?” Between us and our listeners, the consensus seemed to be “a sense of humour”, though Daniel insisted that a cock helps.

Another Lambert special

We told you we loved Adam Lambert, and to prove it we'll be doing another two-hour special on the Glittery Alien from Planet Fierce this Sunday 29 August from 9pm to 11pm! A slot opened up on the grid and it was offered to us, and we said, 'Can we do another show on Adam Lambert?' The answer was yes, so it's ON.

Last time we did this we had people listening all over the world at joy.org.au/listenlive. Our Twitter feed went crazy, and we even received a tweet from Adam himself! We look forward to seeing how it goes this time around.

Click here for the equivalent world times for 9pm in Melbourne. We hope you can tune in!

Celebrity Theme Party - 26 August

Tonight on our monthly Celebrity Theme Party, our guest is Chris Stevenson, trainer and technical dude from San Francisco-based global IT company Thoughtworks. He's bringing five of his favourite party songs, and Katie, Nat and Daniel will be adding their own favourites to the mix.

PROMISES songs - 19 August

Here is the playlist for last week's show, which was the third of our trio of election-themed shows. Seeing as how Australia has ended up with a hung parliament after last Saturday's federal election, the BLAME, SHAME and PROMISES are still flying thick and fast!

The Promise - Girls Aloud
Too Young for Promises - Koo De Tah
Promises - Kylie Minogue
Promised You a Miracle - Simple Minds
Promises, Promises - Dionne Warwick
Promises - Lyle Lovett
Promises - The Cranberries
Promises - Take That
The Promise - Olivia Newton-John
You Promised Me (Tu es foutu) - In-Grid
The Promise - Hayley Clare

Costumes? Dress code for the party was Promise Rings, and everyone had to stand around not touching each other. At a given signal, our guests were told they could remove their promise rings and let their crazy roam free. You can imagine what happened after that. ;)

We love Adam Lambert

If you've only been listening to Theme Party for a short time, you might have missed the two-hour special we did back in March on the then-little-known-in-Australia Adam Lambert. Since then, Australia has gone crazy for Adam, with both Whataya Want from Me and If I Had You going platinum. Australian fans are eagerly anticipating the GlamNation tour dates here in October.

You can listen to the show here on TheSpindleshay's blog, All That Glitters, and then, if you're interested, have a look back at our April posts to see how our special WENT OFF all over the world.

We hope to do another Adam Lambert Theme Party in October in honour of Adam's Australian tour. Watch this space!

Our first "celebrity" Theme Party - 29 July

As per our last blog post, it was our pleasure to welcome Siro Battaglin to the JOY studio for our first "Celebrity Theme Party". We'll be having a Celebrity Theme Party on the last Thursday of every month, in which our guest brings some of his or her favourite party tracks and we fill up the playlist with party songs of our own.

Here's the playlist, with the name of the person who chose it in parentheses (Nat was absent as she had to go to work):
All the Lovers - Kylie Minogue (Siro, Katie, Daniel)
Gloria - Mando Diao (Siro)
Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime - Nena with Kim Wilde (Daniel)
Telephone - Lady Gaga and Beyonce (Katie, Siro)
In My Head - Remady (Siro)
Pretty Vegas - INXS (Katie)
Glow - Madcon (Siro)
Satellite - Lena Meyer-Landruth (Daniel)
Comic Strip - Fiona Thorn (Katie, Daniel)
Down the Rabbit Hole - Adam Lambert (Katie)

Costumes: Siro wore his school tie as a G-string (and nothing else!), Daniel wore a business suit, and Katie wore a nude body stocking covered in glitter.

There was no Conversation Pit, but Nat did phone in from work, where she had the radio tuned to JOY for the entertainment of her co-workers. And there was a fair amount of discussion of Eurovision 2010, because Daniel and Siro are both huge fans and were both in Germany during this year's competition. Apparently it was crazy-fun!

It's party time!

Tonight we're introducing a new, monthly type of Theme Party. On the last Thursday every month, we will have an in-studio guest, whom we have asked to bring five of their favourite party songs. The rest of the playlist will be made up of some of Katie, Nat and Daniel's favourite party songs. Tonight's guest is Mr Siro Battaglin, resident conductor and repetiteur at Cologne Opera in Germany. Originally from Melbourne, Siro is in town for a holiday and will share stories and music from the German gay scene.

HEAT songs - 22 July

Daniel was still sick, so once again it was just Katie and Nat.

Here's the playlist:
Canned Heat - Jamiroquai
The Heat Is On - Glenn Frey
Heat of the Night - Aqua
Heat of the Moment - Asia
Heat Wave - Ella Fitzgerald
(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave - Martha & The Vandellas
Heatseeking Pleasure Machine - Paulmac feat. Tex Perkins
Steam Heat - Carol Haney with Buzz Miller and Peter Gennaro
Turning Up the Heat - Vanessa Amorosi
Heat Treatment - Graham Parker & The Rumour

Costumes: Nat came in "doona [duvet] pyjamas", as seen on the Shopping Channel, while Katie was dressed in athletic gear - she was taking part in a heat. Geddit?

In the Conversation Pit, the topic was "What have you done in the heat of the moment?" Listeners' (and presenters') answers included stripping down to only underpants and shoes at a dance party, knocking a girl out at school because she was rude, and pashing a stranger (or two ...) at a pub.

Daniel's Cocktail Menu was given by Katie, and featured a Heat Wave, a Tropical Heat and a Heat of the Moment (from supercocktails.com). Very fruity.

Tonight's show

Just about ready to go with tonight's HEAT show. Looking forward to warming up the studio!

WINTER songs - 15 July

Daniel was sick with a winter lurgy, so it was just Katie and Nat for the WINTER show.

Here's the playlist:
Winter Wonderland - Eurythmics
Hazy Shade of Winter - The Bangles
Winter Winds - Mumford & Sons
Wintercoat - Paul Kelly & The Messengers
White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes
Walk Out to Winter - Aztec Camera
Winter in America (Leave Love Enough Alone) - Doug Ashdown
A Winter's Tale - Queen
Warm This Winter - Gabriella Cilmi

Costumes: Nat came as a "snow bunny", in layer upon layer of ski gear; during the party, several layers may or may not have been removed. Katie came as a "snow-woman" - she sprayed herself with fake snow, put a carrot on her nose and wrapped a scarf around her neck. Fetching!

In the Conversation Pit, the topic was "What is your favourite thing about winter?" Listeners' answers included winter clothes ("Everyone just looks so fashionable!"), hot warming drinks such as hot chocolate and mulled wine, open fires, and snuggling in bed listening to the rain on the window. We decided that Melbourne does winter well - it's not TOO cold, and there are lots of things to do (football, the Film Festival, etc.).

Katie's Clutch Purse contained trivia about the way animals and plants cope with winter. Some hibernate, some migrate to warmer places, some store food, some grow extra fur, and some even change colour to blend in with the snow.

Theme for 15 July show

It's freezing here in Melbourne, so our theme for this week is WINTER. Come and join us in Nat's toasty-warm Conversation Pit for some good company and good music.

We're coming back!

Yay! Theme Party will be back on JOY from 8 July, every Thursday night 9-10pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. No more Thursday Drive for Nat and Katie and only one hour instead of two, but that's cool. Let us know in the comments if you have any theme suggestions.

Thursday, April 15, 2010

We're doing Thursday Drive

Nat and Katie are official new hosts for JOY's Thursday Drive, with Daniel popping in for the last hour each week. Read JOY's press release here. It's a bit different from Theme Party as all the music is playlisted and we have to do regular traffic and weather updates - but hopefully our style translates well to the format! Catch us every week 3 to 6 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Hopefully we'll get to do a second show!

Thanks to some lovely person on Twitter (who are you? tell us!), most of the show was recorded. You can listen to it as many times as you like on TheSpindleShay's blog, All That Glitters.
